The Checkpoint Prevention and Sexual Health Centres have completed 10 years of interventions in the field of prevention and sexual health promotion, in collaboration with AHF Europe. Ath Checkpoint opened in 2012 and Thess Checkpoint in 2014.
With two fixed structures in central Athens and Thessaloniki and two mobile units, Checkpoint has conducted a total of 170,000 free HIV, hepatitis B & C and syphilis tests, and distributed over 9,000,000 condoms free of charge. More than 1,500 HIV diagnoses have been made at our centres in Athens and Thessaloniki, while 71% of those diagnosed have been successfully linked through the Checkpoints to the respective Infection Units within one month. Checkpoint has been cited as best practice in the guidelines of the World Health Organization (2015) and the European Centre for Disease Control (2018).
One of the innovative best practices utilized by Checkpoint is peer-based counselling. Users of the free services of the facilities can discuss in a friendly environment any issue they are concerned about regarding their sexual health, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity and sex practices. As a result of this trusting relationship, in recent years Checkpoints have recorded one in three new HIV diagnoses in Greece and are instrumental in fostering a culture of regular testing.
